Protective-style studio in Richmond

A style for the weeks ahead

Knot is a studio for braids, twists, locs and crochet. Tell us how long you want to wear it and we'll plan the day, and the take-down. We're taking new clients.

  • Braids, twists, locs, crochet
  • Consultation first

The guide

How long do you want to wear it?

Pick a family of styles. Each says how many weeks it is worn and what taking it down involves.

Worn 4 to 8 weeks

Braids

Knotless, box, cornrows and Fulani. The longest wear of the four, and the longest day in the chair. Small parts last and look neat longer, and larger parts finish sooner.

  • Install: 4 to 8 hours, by size and length

  • Take-down: 2 to 3 hours, which we do, or book it with your next style

  • Wash your scalp every week or two, and dry it well

Worn 4 to 6 weeks

Twists

Passion, Senegalese and Marley twists with added hair, or two-strand twists on your own. Lighter than braids, and softer at the root as they age.

  • Install: 2 to 6 hours

  • Take-down: 1 to 2 hours; twists unravel faster than braids

  • Tie them up at night so the ends stay put

Retwist every 4 to 8 weeks

Locs

Starter locs and the retwists that keep them neat, or faux locs for a while. Real locs are for keeping, so we plan visits, not a take-down.

  • Starter session: 3 to 5 hours

  • Retwist: 1.5 to 2.5 hours, every 4 to 8 weeks

  • Faux locs are taken down in a visit; real locs stay

Worn 4 to 6 weeks

Crochet

Hair looped onto cornrows or braided parts with a needle: crochet braids, crochet twists and crochet faux locs. A shorter install, and an easy change of look.

  • Install: 2 to 4 hours; crochet locs take longer

  • Take-down: 1 to 2 hours

  • Plan a refresh at the part if it loosens

The studio

One braider, one client, one long afternoon

Each appointment is a braider and a client for the whole install, at a window, with a stool and a playlist you can pick. Bring a show, a charger and something to eat.

We book the whole day for a long style, so nobody is rushed and nothing is started that we can't finish.

  • Consultation before any new style

  • A break halfway through a long install

  • Take-down visits booked like any other service

Before you book

What people ask first

How long will my style take?

Most installs run between four and eight hours. Cornrows, twists on natural hair and crochet are shorter. Each service lists its time, and your consultation sets the day.

Do I need a consultation?

New clients start with one, in the studio or by text with photos. We agree the style, size and length, and give you a written quote and a time estimate before we part anything.

Can I bring my own braiding hair?

Yes. Say so when you book and tell us the type, and we'll plan the amount with you. If you'd rather we supply it, that shows in your quote.

How long does a style last?

Plan on four to eight weeks for braids, four to six for twists and crochet, and a retwist every four to eight weeks for locs. We'll tell you when yours is due out.

How much will it cost?

It depends on the style, the size of the parts, the length and your braider's level. Prices show when you book, and How pricing works explains each part.
